Adhesive tape protects the surfaces you want to leave unpainted, helps create straight lines and even decorative patterns on surfaces.
How to choose masking tape for painting
The tape should be chosen according to the surface you want to paint. If it is a smooth or structured (crepe) surface, then it is advisable to use paper as backing material for the tape. It has several levels of elasticity, from low for sharp edges to high for curved lines.
Fabric is a backing material suitable for a PE (film) surface. This material is used to protect against moisture, is flexible and tear resistant.
Use PVC for dimensionally stable, smooth or grooved surfaces. PVC is moisture and UV resistant, can be hand torn in a straight line effortlessly.
How to apply tape when painting
To apply the tape, make sure that the surface to be painted is perfectly dry and clean, free of impurities and moisture. If you want to make a pattern over a recently painted surface, wait until it has dried completely before applying the tape.
Apply the tape lightly, without bunching it up and without stretching it forcefully. In this way, the tape adheres better to the surface, reducing the amount of paint that can get under it. After application, press over the tape with a cloth. This helps disperse the pressure and allows the adhesive to adhere better to the surface, eliminating any air bubbles. This avoids paint seepage.
To apply the tape straight you can use the line indicated by the wall, window or flat surface.
When you start applying the paint with a paintbrush, it is advisable to spread the paint around the adhesive tape first and only then to apply the paint over it. This reduces the risk of the paint getting under the tape. Use a moderate amount of paint on the tape to prevent it from stretching or sticking.
How to remove tape when painting
It is best to use a quality adhesive tape that will not tear or allow seepage. Next, it is important that the tape can be easily removed from the painted surface.
When you buy it, check its type (paper backing, plastic foil, fabric) and see if the painted surface is suitable for it. The adhesive tape is removed by gently pulling one corner at a sharp angle to the painted surface.
It is advisable to remove the tape before the paint has dried on the wall, as the dried paint acts as a seal and the tape will be harder to peel off. The product should indicate how long to leave it on before peeling it off the surface.
Where to store painters tape
The adhesive tape should be stored in a dry place, out of direct sunlight and away from too low temperatures. Choose a covered container in a place at room temperature. Under optimal temperature conditions, adhesive tape has a 1-year guarantee.
